The Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department is investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl who died at Arkansas Children’s Hospital as a result of injuries investigators believe was a result of physical abuse. McKenna and Everette Cawley, are in custody facing charges including capital murder.
According to the TAPD, at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, officers responded to St. Michael regarding three-year-old who was unresponsive and had injuries staff suspected were a result of abuse. The girl was given initial treatment at St. Michael and then transported by helicopter to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock with extensive external and internal injuries. The child later died and was pronounced deceased at 5:10 p.m. Her body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for autopsy.
The TAPD said two other small children, an infant and a two-year-old boy, were placed into the care of the Arkansas Department of Child Protective Services.
The TAPD Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the death and suspected abuse of the three-year-old girl. In addition, TAPD detectives have reportedly found evidence of an “overwhelming amount of abuse” of the two-year-old boy as well.
At this time, McKenna Belcher-Carley, 26, is charged with capital murder and domestic battery in the second degree. Everette Cawley, 23, is charged with two counts of permitting the abuse of a minor. The TAPD said they are working with the Prosecutor and the two may face additional charges.
In honor of the deceased girl and all other children who have suffered abuse, and in observance of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the TAPD is encouraging everyone to wear blue on Friday.
