The DeAnn Volunteer Fire Department was able to bless eight children in Hempstead County with a nice Christmas through fundraisers they held throughout the year.
They rallied the community, who then sent in nominations for four families that were in need this season. The firefighters went to each family’s residence to visit and jotted down a list of the needs and wants for every child within the home.
Next they set their sights on shopping; ten firefighters drove to Texarkana where they filled sacks to the brim of items on each individual list. Necessities came first, boots, shoes, socks, things they really needed and then things that they wanted came next, toys, ect.
The families each received a full Christmas dinner that included ham, cornbread, stuffing, and green bean casserole.. As for the children, smiles were in abundance as Santa himself delivered gifts to their homes, riding in the front seat of the DeAnn Fire and Rescue Truck.
The firefighters switched the lights on and let each kiddo come out, sit on Santa’s lap and have a look around the fire truck while the families took pictures of a Christmas not soon to be forgotten.
“It was more of a blessing to us than it was to the kids, even though they are gonna be happy with it, just knowing we were able to help and seeing the smiles on those kids faces, that’s what it’s all about. I also want to challenge the other fire departments in this area, in the future, to reach out to their community and start a ‘Shop with a Fireman’ program,”Fire Chief, Justin Devenney said.
Devenney also expressed appreciation and gratitude to the community for helping out, as well as to the firemen that donated and gave their time to make Christmas a little brighter this year.
